BIOGRAPHY / ARTIST STATEMENT
Julius Fontana, born in Milan in 1959, is a visual artist and researcher who has lived in Rome for several decades.
Falling in love with photography around the age of 14, he explored both analog and digital dimensions as a self-taught practitioner. As early as 1993 in Padua, he expressed his visual sensitivity by directing photo shoots and compositions for commercial catalogs and jewelry.
Since 2018, he has shared his work on the international platform 500px, and more recently on Instagram. His artistic research moves between photography, matter, and digital manipulation to offer an original and unconventional vision of the world around him.
For Julius, photography is neither a final destination nor a mere capture of reality, but rather the first layer of skin: the foundation from which to reveal what lies beneath the surface. Without arbitrary cuts or alterations, he works on the image with a raw, creative approach, engaging in a tactile interaction with the pixels.
His works are living surfaces composed of reflections, refractions, and fluid transformations — from the portraits of Liquid Faces to the density of Liquid Tulips, through to the horizons of Caffè Astratto, to name a few.
Far from academic theories and complex conceptualism, his work is a simple and direct invitation: to step back for a moment from the background noise and allow oneself to be captured by a different way of seeing things.
