The Importance of Listening

How difficult is it to create independent culture in Rome?

On the occasion of Rome Art Week, Fondazione Opera Lucifero presents a conversation exploring the experiences, challenges and perspectives of those who create and promote independent culture in Rome. Curators and organisers will discuss the importance of listening and the need to create spaces for dialogue, collaboration and experimentation beyond institutional circuits.

The event will be attended by Lorenzo Minio Paluello, Councillor of Rome’s First Municipality, and moderated by Giancarlino Benedetti Corcos. Photographs by artist Nicole Günther will be exhibited for the occasion.

STAGE STORIES

Theatre Photography as Fine Art — Beyond Documentation

As part of Rome Art Week 2026, a selection of works from STAGE STORIES will enter into an initial dialogue with the capital. The presentation of these black-and-white images marks the start of a long-term project. An artist residency at a theatre or opera house in Rome is planned for one of the future editions of Rome Art Week. These new works will expand STAGE STORIES and integrate the specific aura and history of Rome’s theatre world into the cycle of works. Through the subsequent presentation of the works in Rome and in Cologne/Bonn, the project will evolve into a vibrant, intercultural exchange between the cities, the performing arts and photography.

Poetic Transformation | Artistic Statement

In my artistic engagement with the theatre, I have understood theatrical productions not as mere objects of documentation, but as points of departure for fine art photography. Through poetic transformation, the scenes are translated into autonomous visual worlds that reflect the multifaceted tension between light and shadow. My photography opens up a new space between the staging, my subjective perception, and the individual interpretation and reading of the viewer. In this way, a visual language emerges that deliberately detaches itself from the stage production and instead explores the essence of the theatrical in an autonomous artistic form.
