Founded in Rome, THE FLOOR – Modern Art Gallery is an independent gallery dedicated to contemporary artistic research. Through an exhibition programme that brings together established, mid-career and emerging artists, the gallery develops a curatorial practice focused on the quality of artistic inquiry and on creating exhibitions that foster dialogue across different languages, experiences and generations.
The gallery is grounded in the belief that a work of art is first and foremost a site of cultural inquiry rather than merely an exhibition object. For this reason, THE FLOOR privileges projects in which artistic practice engages with critical thought, memory, the history of images and the transformations of the present, encouraging an open dialogue between the visual arts and other fields of knowledge.
Particular attention is given to artistic practices that understand the image as a form of knowledge capable of generating new imaginaries and expanding interpretative possibilities. Within this framework, the gallery supports artists whose work extends beyond formal concerns, constructing meaningful relationships between aesthetic experience, critical reflection and symbolic complexity, while recognising art as a privileged space for the production of meaning.
Alongside its exhibition programme, THE FLOOR promotes publications, talks, presentations and interdisciplinary projects, conceiving the gallery as a space for dialogue, research and cultural production. Its activities are developed within an international perspective while maintaining a strong commitment to the Italian contemporary art scene and to the promotion of independent artistic practices.
Rather than defining a single stylistic identity, THE FLOOR has developed a working method based on close dialogue with artists and on the conviction that every exhibition can provide new ways of interpreting the complexity of contemporary culture while contributing to the development of an informed and critically engaged audience.
